My Birth Story by Jennine
I was 5 weeks into my first pregnancy I kept getting really bad
pains. I was glad to be on holiday from work so I could go to the
hospital and get the pains checked out. The doctor looked at me
and then told me she was sending me for an emergency scan as they
thought I was having an ectopic pregnancy. During the scan, I remember
the lady saying to me "oh.." . Fearing the worst I said
"it's in my tube ?". "No" she replied "there's
two".
What was I was going to do with two babies ??! I was so scared.
I will always remember the look on my husbands face. I was very
lucky I only had the one week where I was sick but it was all the
time. At 28 weeks I phoned my husband to come home from work at
about 2am (he works shifts) as I just didn't feel well. By 7 am
I told him I was going to the hospital as I knew something was not
right .I got a horrible midwife who kept telling me I just had a
virus and to go home to bed. I kept telling her these pains are
like every 15 minutess and they are getting steadily worse, but
she wouldn't listen to me. In the end I screamed at her that I wanted
to see a doctor, and after about 20 minutes got my wish.
When I was examined, the doctor discovered I was already 2cm dilated.
They phoned my husband and by 8am I was in the ambulance being transferred
to a bigger hospital in Manchester. I was crying as I was so scared,
but the staff there were great. They looked after my husband just
as well as they looked after me. They managed to stop my contractions
and after 5 days they let me come home. Then two weeks later I woke
to go to the toilet and as I got back in bed and I remember thinking
"I'm still peeing"! So I went back to the toilet and noticed
the plug.
I phoned my husband but he didn't answer - then my credit went
so I had to wake my step-son to use his phone to call my mother-in-law.
At 1am both my husband and mother-in-law arrived and took me to
my local hospital where I was examined once again. The doctor discovered
it was far too late to transfer me to Manchester this time, as I
was 9cm dilated. By 3am I was so tired I remember crying. The gas
and air was making me sick and I was all too aware of the fact that
I was only 30 weeks and my babies were probably quite small. . I
had 12 doctors and midwives present in the labour room - the consultant
told us both that we had the A team around us.
Then at 3 15am I needed to push and that's when the real drama
began. Sarah got stressed out and her heart rate dropped to around
35 so I had to go for a emergency section . All went well in theatre
though, and after 12 hours of waiting I got to see my two lovely
girls Sarah Louise who was 3 pound 1 ounce and Jemma Paris who was
3 pound eleven ounce. They spent about 6 weeks on special care,
and are now there are nearly 14 months old and doing just great!
Being a mum of twins is hectic, I always says its like a military
operation to just to go to Asda. If there was one thing I would
have like to have known it's that there are other mums out there
whom have been through similar stuff to me, as some times you feel
a little lonely and speaking to mums with out twins is not the same.
The thing I love the most is how they seem to swap roles from week
to week, and when they are playing together. The hardest part is
when they are both teething at the same time and when Sarah decides
to wake Jemma in the middle of the night (!) but I have a good husband
who helps me so I am lucky, I woudl not change a thing.
